Cannot open a database file upgraded directly from 2008/09 or earlier in POS Enterprise

Legacy KB ID: 3833

Question

Why can’t I open my POS database file upgraded from  2008/09 and earlier in POS Enterprise?

Answer

The security features in POS have been strengthened with the 2009/10 release and again with the 2010/11 R2 (POS Enterprise) release.  During the upgrade POS Enterprise will turn on security.  The POS Administrator must then be accessed by the POSAdmin user.  Where security has not been turned on in a 2008/09 or earlier release, POS Enterprise will still turn on security but will not create the POSAdmin user.  The upgraded file cannot be accessed as the permissible user does not exist.

You could turn on security in 2008/09 and earlier first and the file will upgrade, but Reckon cannot support this file.

This problem will not occur on upgrading a 2009/10 or 2010/11 R1 database file without security enabled.

Workaround

Upgrade the 2008/09 and earlier database file to 2009/10 with the trial version provided on the POS Enterprise DVD.  To access the trial version:

1.    From the Splash Screen select Upgrade Information

2.    Click on here on the line A trial version can be found on the DVD here

3.    Install POS 2009/10 and then upgrade your database file

4.    Close POS 2009/10, open POS Enterprise and upgrade your 2009/10 database file.
