Retail POS peripheral device not working despite successful installation

Legacy KB ID: 4680

Question

I have downloaded and successfully installed the latest driver for the Senor GTP-290B3 USB Receipt Printer, so why doesn’t Retail POS recognise it and not print the receipt?  I can see that a virtual COM port has been assigned to it.

Answer

You will experience this issue with any peripheral device on Retail POS (printers, scanners, displays) if the virtual COM port is assigned to port number greater than 9.  Retail POS devices are limited to reading single digit COM ports only.

If you have a number of other devices installed on this PC that utilize virtual COM ports, then all the single digit COM Ports may be used. Bluetooth and Mobile Wireless Internet devices are known to utilize several COM ports.

Workaround

Ensure that you have the correct driver for your device and that it has been properly installed.  You can check it by installing it on another PC. Then continue.

1.    Uninstall all devices that use virtual COM ports.

2.    Delete all virtual COM ports in the Device Manager:

a.    Right click Computer (or My Computer) icon and select Manage;

b.    Click on Device Manager;

c.    Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) entry.

d.    Right click the first virtual COM port and select Uninstall.

Computers usually have two physical COM ports, labelled COM1 and COM3.  Do not delete these.

e.    Repeat for each virtual COM port.

f.     Close the Device Manager and Computer Management screen.

3.    Install Retail POS first and attach all peripheral devices.

4.    Check that Retail POS and its devices are working properly.

5.    Reinstall other devices that use virtual COM ports.

In some instances, these steps will not free up previously used virtual COM ports.  You will need to delete the virtual COM ports assignments in the computer’s BIOS.

Take note:  Reckon strongly recommends you contact your IT professional about changes to the BIOS.  Incorrect changes to the BIOS may render your computer inoperable.
