Quicken Launcher has stopped working and This does not appear to be errors after upgrade Win10

Legacy KB ID: 5453

Question

Why do I have to continually activate by Reckon Accounts Personal after having upgraded my operating system to Windows 10?  I keep getting two error messages:

  • Quicken Launcher has stopped working; and then

  • This does not appear to be the same computer your copy of Quicken was
    originally installed on. Before you can use Quicken you will need to
    contact Reckon to update your license.

After I have activated, the previously opened file is not remembered and I am asked whether I am a new user and have to activate again.

Then backups of my files fail.

Answer

Reinstall Reckon Accounts Personal  to the default location:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Reckon Accounts Personal 2016, and then move your datafiles to the default data directory: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Quicken\Sample

The Issue

When you upgrade your operating system to Windows 10 on a PC that includes a Reckon Accounts Personal range 2016 installation, the installation and its datafiles are moved to a virtual directory:  C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Reckon Accounts Personal 2016.

The error is generated when your launch icon can no longer find the path to necessary files because of the new location.

Workaround

  1. Find the location of the database and install. It will most likely be in the directory: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Reckon Accounts Personal 2016.

  2. Uninstall the current installation through the Control Panel;

  3. Install Reckon Accounts Personal 2016 into the default directory:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Reckon Accounts Personal 2016;

  4. Move data files to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Quicken\Sample;

  5. Open RAP and Activate over the net.  If this attempt fails, activate via phone (call customer Service on 1300 784253);

  6. Open DataFiles from new location – there should be no reference to new users and need to activate again;

  7. Create backups – they should create with no error.
