Quicken launcher has stopped working, when launching Quicken on an ACER laptop
Legacy KB ID: 3754
Question
When I launch Quicken it crashes. Why?
Answer
This error has been reported by users of ACER PCs with Empowering Technology. There is an incompatibility between the DragAndDrop protection mechanism built in to the eDataSecurity tool (installed on most ACER laptops) and a Microsoft Operating System component that is used by Quicken.
Solution
Warning:
The following steps have been suggested by Intuit Canada and have not been tested on the Australian version. This fix will modify your Registry. Reckon Ltd takes no responsibility for the effects of following these steps, but believes it is safe to do so. You may want to consult your IT professional before continuing.
As a first measure you should create a Restore Point for your PC before starting this procedure.
You will need to disable the ACER shell extension program:
- Go to : https://en.wiki.mcneel.com/content/upload/files/HKLM_BLock_DSPProtectDLL.zip and download the file: HKLM_BLock_DSPProtectDLL.reg to your desktop.
- Double-click the saved HKLM_BLock_DSPProtectDLL.reg file. When asked if you want to modify the registry, answer yes.
- Restart your computer, then try installing or opening Quicken.
- Note: You can delete both the zip and reg files when you are finished.
If this fix fails to work, you will need to uninstall Empowering Technology:
Please note the warning in this ACER support article about removing Empowering Technology:
https://support.acer.com/acerpanam/notebook/0000/Acer/Aspire1300/Aspire1300faq34.shtml
- Recover your last Restore Point
- Uninstall Empowering Technology:
Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs) and uninstall Empowering Technology.
Refer to your ACER manual and ACER technical support for instructions to uninstall Empowering Technology and not impede the performance of your PC.
