Question

Why am I getting Error -6150 , -1006: "An error occurred when Reckon Accounts (formerly QuickBooks) tried to create, open, or use the company file," or Error 80070057: "There was an unexpected error reported while trying to run  Reckon Accounts ..."?

Answer

What is happening?

Double-clicking on a backup, portable company file, or a file with an extension other than .qbw, the following error occurs:

‘An error occurred when  Reckon Accounts tried to create, open, or use the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Reckon Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes: (-6150,-1006)’.

Why is this happening ?

  •  Reckon Accounts cannot read the company file because the Reckon Accounts file extension was changed or is the wrong type (.qbm, .qbb, .qbx).
  • This error can also occur during conversion or creation of a backup or portable company file if Reckon Accounts detects data damage in the company file.
  • This error may possibly occur if the Reckon Accounts installation is damaged.
  • This error can also be caused by attempting to open the portable company file (.qbm) without having Reckon Accounts open.

How to fix the problem ?

  • Verify that the file extension displays company name.qbw and not a shortcut.
  • Copy the company file, change the extension to .qbm, .qbb, or .qbx, and follow the appropriate steps to open a portable file, backup, or accountant's review.
  • If the error occurs during the conversion or creation of a backup or portable company file, run the Verify utility to check the file for data damage. If it finds damage, run the Rebuild utility.
  • Repair the Reckon Accounts installation.

Uninstall, and then reinstall Reckon Accounts.

Detailed Instructions :

Naming Convention:

  • It mostly happens if you rename your file incorrectly. For example, if your backup file name is "Sample Company.QBW.QBB" or "Sample Company.QBB.QBM" you will receive this error. A backup file name should be "Sample Company.QBB" or "Sample Company.QBM" etc. It might contain date and time stamp but should only contain the one extension (QBB, QBW, QBM, QBA, and QBY).Also filename should not contain any other extensions. Example: Sample CompanyQBB.QBM or Sample CompanyQBM.QBB etc.

Troubleshooting a conversion from a previous version of Reckon Accounts :

  • If the error occurred during a conversion from a prior version of Reckon accounts, restore the backup that was created during the conversion process into the prior version of Reckon Accounts.
  • Note: If all computers in a multi-user configuration report the error, do not Repair or Uninstall and Reinstall Reckon Accounts. The issue is data related, not program related.
