Cannot open email attachments sent through Windows Live Mail

Legacy KB ID: 3961

Question

Why can’t some of my clients open the pdf attachment in the email I send them?  I am using Windows Live Mail.

Answer

We have found that Windows Live Mail will alter the attachment name slightly when the Company Name in Reckon Accounts contains a full stop at the end.

Instead of attaching the PDF as Inv123_from_abc_assoc_inc.pdf, it will attach it as Inv123_from_abc_assoc_inc._pdf.

As the extension of the file is now _pdf, the recipient’s PDF reader does not recognise the file as a PDF document and cannot open it.

A full stop within the company Name does not cause a problem.

The presence of the full stop does not have any negative impact when sending through Microsoft Office Outlook.  We have not heard of this problem on other emailing systems.

Workaround

Remove the full stop from the Company Name in the Reckon Accounts company file

1.    Company > Company Information

2.    In the Company Name field, remove the full stop at the end of the name.

Additional Information

When a recipient attempts to open an attachment with the extension _pdf, he will get an error message and an invitation to select a program to open the file.

Follow the prompts and select your PDF reader (e.g. Adobe Reader).  Windows will set up an association with _pdf to be opened by your PDF reader so that future attachments will open immediately.
