Retail POS Setup has detected that QuickBooks has not been installed

Legacy KB ID: 4093

Question

I'm installing Point of Sale Administrator programme on a computer with QuickBooks already installed, why do I get this error that 'Setup couldn't detect QuickBooks' on my machine

Answer

This error occurs if your previous installation failed to write the Install Date registry key. This key allows other applications to recognise the installation of this particular QuickBooks version.

Workaround

Firstly, clean uninstall and reinstall QuickBooks.  Click here for KB 331 for full directions.

If the problem persists, then continue with the following steps:

**********************************************************************

Care:  This workaround involves modifying the Registry.  Modifications to the Registry if not carried out correctly may impede your ability to use your computer.  If you are not confident of making modifications to the registry you should contact your IT professional.

**********************************************************************

  1. Create a Restore Point.
  2. Open the Registry Editor  -  Start > Run > type regedit > OK (XP: regedt32)
  3. If you did not make a Restore Point make a backup of the Registry  -  File > Export > select a location and name > select All > Save.

4.       Open the Registry Key:  HKey Local Machine > Software > Intuit > QuickBooksCommon > History > Install

a.       A subkey named with the date and time in the format:  yyyymmddhhmmss;

b.      The date and time should be before the current system timeclock and after the last date and time of a QuickBooks installation.

5.       If no date and time key exists, create one:

a.       Highlight the Install sub-key, right click and select New > Key;

b.      Rename the key New Key #1 to a date and time before your current system clock – eg: 20110213112233

c.       In the right pane create 4 New Value keys by:

                                                               i.      Right-click the background and select New;

                                                             ii.      Select type: string value.

d.      Leave the first field default alone

e.      Right click New Value #1 and select Rename and change the name to flavor

f.        Right click flavour and select Modify;

g.       In the Value data box, enter your edition if using Accounting, Plus or Pro, or your flavour if using Premier or Enterprise (Enterprise codes in brackets):

                                                               i.      Accounting – enter Lite;

                                                             ii.      Plus – enter basic;

                                                            iii.      Pro – enter pro;

                                                           iv.      General Edition – enter superpro (bel);

                                                             v.      Retail Edition – enter retail (belretail);

                                                           vi.      Contractor Edition – enter contractor (belcontractor);

                                                          vii.      Wholesale & Manufacturing Edition – enter wholesale (belwholesale);

                                                        viii.      Nonprofit Edition – enter nonprofit (belnonprofit);

                                                           ix.      Professional Edition – enter professional (belprofessional);

                                                             x.      Accountant Edition – enter accountant (belacct).

h.      Click OK to save the field;

i.         Right click New Value #2 and rename to path with the value field of your installation directory - eg: C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 20xx-xx\;

j.        Right click New Value #3 and rename to trial with the value field of 0 (zero);

k.       Right click New Value #4 and rename to version with the value field of nn; where nn represents the version number of your QuickBooks:

                                                               i.      2011/12 = 20

                                                             ii.      2010/11 = 19

                                                            iii.      2009/10 = 18

l.         When all fields renamed and modified close the Registry.

6.       Install POS Administrator and it should recognise your QuickBooks installation.
