Legacy KB ID: 3922

Question

Why do I get the following errors when I’m trying to print a report from POS to a print file?

First error:  ‘The file could not be written to.  Verify that you have permission to write to that location and that the file is not in use or choose an alternate location.

Second Error:  Error Printing report

An error occurred while attempting to print to the Report Printer.

Error code: 482 – Printer error

Check the Report Printer to see if it is working correctly or change your printer selection to print the reports on a different Windows printer.

Answer

This error is not directly a POS problem.

Generally these errors in printing occur when you are trying to save a print file with the same name and location of a print file that is already opened.

This may occur if in your end of day process you save a report to a print file like Windows XPS Document Writer or a PDF Writer, open that file and leave it opened.  You then go back in the end of day process and try to create another print file with the same name and location.  You cannot print to a file that is already open.

Solution 1:  choose another name and/or location for the second print file.

Solution 2:  close the file that is open and save the print file again.

Additional Information

If the above conditions don’t match your circumstances, then it may be due to a fault in your printing system.  Consider the following:

1.    You don't have a printer installed from the Windows Control Panel.

Open the Control Panel, double-click the Printers icon, and choose Add Printer to install a printer.

2.    Your printer isn't online.

Physically switch the printer online.

3.    Your printer is jammed or out of paper.

Physically correct the problem.

4.    You tried to print a form to a printer that can accept only text.

Switch to an installed printer that can print graphics.
