QBiTools.dll and ACM.dll files are missing when launching QuickBooks

Legacy KB ID: 4862

Question

Why can’t Reckon Accounts find the files QBiTools.dll or ACM.dll and not launch?  I get the error:

QBW32.EXE – System Error

The program can’t start because QBITools.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Answer

This issue may be experienced by AVAST internet security users after applying a recent update.  An update may incorrectly identify the files QBiTools.dll and ACM.dll as suspicious and quarantines it.  When Reckon Accounts launches, it cannot find this necessary file and fails.

Workaround

The exact steps you need to take vary according to the AVAST product you have.  If you need assistance in carrying out these steps for your product, please refer to your AVAST documentation or call their support.

Make QBiTools.dll file an exception in AVAST Free Antivirus

1.    Security > File system Shield > Settings > Exclusions

2.    Click the Add button to add a new file;

3.    Browse to the Reckon Accounts installation folder;

The default location is – C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\Reckon Accounts 20xx-x1

4.    Tick the box next to this folder;

5.    In the Add box you will see the folder you have selected.  You will need to add the name of the files – QBITools.dll and ACM.dll

6.    Click OK to add to the exclusion list;

7.    Retrieve the QBITools.dll from quarantine:

a.    Maintenance > Virus chest;

b.    Highlight the file QBITools.dll, right click and select Restore.

Highlight the file ACM.dll, right click and select Restore.

8.    If you do not have the QBITools.dll and ACM.dll files in quarantine, then they have been deleted. You will need to repair the Reckon Accounts installation:

a.    Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.

b.    Highlight Reckon Accounts 20xx-x1, right-click it and select Uninstall/Change.

c.    In the Maintenance Wizard select Repair > Next > Repair.

You should now be able to launch Reckon Accounts without any errors.
