Company File corrupts on upgrade from QuickBooks 2007/08 to Reckon Accounts 2016

Legacy KB ID: 5451

Question

Why does my company file get corrupted when I upgrade from QuickBooks 2007/08 to Reckon Accounts 2016?

Answer

Ensure the company file has the complete Customer, Supplier and Employee list and then upgrade to QuickBooks 2008/09 first.  Upgrade from 2008/09 to 2016.

The Issue

This problem will occur if you try to upgrade a company file with just payroll lists – payroll items, Employees and related accounts.

On upgrade, all required links are not present and the file corrupts.

Workaround

  1. Ensure the company file contains the full list of Customers, Suppliers, Employees and Chart of Accounts.

  2. Close your Reckon Accounts and ensure any QuickBooks/Reckon Accounts services have been stopped:
    1. Click on the Start button
    2. In Search programs and files, Type: Services
    3. Select the first Services entry (with a cogwheel icon)
    4. Scroll down the list to Services beginning with the letter Q
    5. For all services titled:
      1. QuickBooks Database Manager Service
      2. QuickBooksDBnn
        Highlight it and click on Stop the service.
    6. Close the Services window.

  3. Step Upgrade – upgrade to Reckon Accounts 2013:
    1. Either:  Insert your 2016 DVD and exit from the opening screen
      Or:  go to unpacked installation files directory (eg Downloads Library)
    2. In Windows/File Explorer, go to Resources > Convert22
    3. Click on setup.exe to start the installation of Reckon Accounts 2013
    4. When complete launch Reckon Accounts 2013 and open the sample file
      Windows 8 and later – right click the Reckon Accounts 2013 launch icon > Properties > Compatibility; and tick the option Run this program as an Administrator.
    5. Ignore the prompt to activate
    6. Copy your QuickBooks 2007/08 backup to the desktop and restore it from there, saving the company file to the Desktop:
      File > Open or Restore Company > Restore a backup copy >;
    7. Check that the file upgraded successfully (compare your Trial Balance)
    8. Create a backup - File> Save Copy or Backup > Backup copy > Local Backup > save right now;
    9. Close Reckon Accounts 2013

  4. Open Reckon Accounts 2016 and restore your Reckon Accounts 2013 backup.
