Error 1920. Service QuickBooks Database manager Service failed when installing

Legacy KB ID: 5256

Question

During installation of Reckon Accounts, I get the following error:

Error 1920.Service QuickBooks Database Manager Service (QBCFMonitorService) failed to start.

Solution

To correct this issue, you will need to enable .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 Services in your Windows Features.

You do not need to close or cancel out the installation - it is recommended to leave it open for the final step in the error correction process.

You can enable the .NET Frameworks by doing the following:

  1. Go to your Windows Start Menu, or press your Windows [⊞] key to open the Start Menu.
  2. Search for/Type in "Turn Windows Features on or off".
    1. If you cannot find this, instead search for/open your Control Panel.
    2. Go to "Programs" or "Programs and Features".
    3. Select "Turn Windows Features on or off". It should be listed under "Programs and Features" or on the left-hand options panel.
  3. At the very top of the list will be two options: .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 4.7/4.8 (it will depend on your Windows edition; both are the same Framework.
  4. Ensure that both .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.7/4.8 have either a Black Square [■] or a tick in their respective selection boxes.

  1. After you have done this, press "Okay".
    1. If you have a popup saying "Windows cannot find the requested files/changes", select "Let Windows download these files for you".
    2. You will get a message stating "Windows completed the requested changes." once done.
  2. After this, you can select "Retry" on the error, and the installation will continue.

The Issue

You will experience this problem when installing new Windows 8 and Windows 10 operating systems. By default, the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 and Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 are not turned on. This service is required by Reckon Accounts Business for installation.

If the problem persists, continue with the following steps until resolved:

  1. Install in Selective Startup
  2. Install with the Built-In Admin user account
  3. Turn off and Turn on .Net Framework
  4. Turn off any .Net Framework installations in Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  5. Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off;
    1. Windows 7: Tick .Net Framework 3.5.1
    2. Windows 8 and Windows 10: Tick .Net Framework 3.5.1, Tick .Net Framework 4.7 (or the latest framework you have available)
  6. Turn on built-in .Net Framework features turned off in step 3(b).
  7. You should now be able to install Reckon Accounts Business without difficulty.
