Insights Demo Book: Design

Setup

In order to simulate a real-life scenario, we placed ourselves in a business mindset, creating quality and accurate data avoiding creating simple demo data which would just result in linear reporting and visualisations.

  • Based on statistics, the most common Entity type used was Company.
  • The most common Business type was a Hospitality operation. We chose a restaurant to represent this due to regular daily sales, high and low seasons, cost of sales related directly to sales, but with substantial fixed costs.
  • We have covered at least 2 financial year: 2021-22 and 2022-23, including the COVID-19 lockdown in Sydney.
  • Data will be updated periodically, effectively, becoming a living document
  • To maintain the integrity of the data, we only allow users to have View Only permission to the Book

Brief Company History

We created a story for the company that fits with our setup and produced a timeline inline with the current events in Sydney, Australia.

All activities and transactions are based on a story line for the period.

2019

In the early 2019, Jerry Signfield along with his wife, Jane, achieved their goal of $650,000 working capital to establish a restaurant operation run by his family.

The restaurant will be a Bistro type offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Based on their feasibility study, Greenwood Plaza in North Sydney is a good location that can attract residents, holiday goers, workers, and students alike.

The capital amount will be made up of the owner’s savings and an approved loan from the Commonwealth Bank – mortgage over his family home.

The name of the Company will be North Shore Bistro (Insights Demo).

2020

The business loan was approved and released to the business account on January 9, 2020.

Jerry also deposited his savings into the business account at this time. The restaurant began kicking off operations in February 2020 by providing down payment for the location (2 months free rent) and start-up expenses have been given.

Jerry and his family launched the restaurant on May 1, 2020.

Then the COVID-19 pandemic situation changed.

NSW lockdown occurred for Restaurants and cafés from May to June 2020.

The owner has already invested on the start-up expenses, but was unable to operate and unable to pull out.

2021

Officially re-opened on 31 December 2020 in time for New Year's Eve.

Started with a year worth of loss but had to stay afloat due to NSW government assistance among others. The previous feasibility study no longer applies as the pandemic has changed the working and studying conditions.

As this is a family-ran operation, it started with 5 employees: Operations, Chef, Cleaner, and two Waitstaff. Jane is the Restaurant Manager and helps in hosting and Cashier, whereas Jerry will be handling the operations side.

Business is slow but with the ease of restriction, it is getting steady.

NSW reintroduced lockdown for Restaurants and cafés from June to October 2021. By August, Sydney has restricted a 5 km travel distance from home. However, by now, the restaurant has established a reputation of great food and service within the residents of the LGA.

There was a dip in Income but ending in positive.

Operational Hours
  • Opens 4 days only on Wednesday to Saturday from 11 AM to 10 PM
  • Opens for brunch and caters until evening for pick-up/deliveries
  • More revenue during working hours than weekends
  • But open on weekends to cater for locals and delivery
  • This also gives time for special occasions on other days, i.e. on Sunday for Weddings and special occasions.

2022

For the next calendar year, the restaurant operation is thinking of new ways to boost income.

Employees are low in morale, but thankful that the owners were caring, and the opportunity still exists.

Meeting discussion raised, and new menu items are to be introduced and promotions to be run. Also, new hires for the kitchen and waitstaff will be conducted so that the owners can focus on strategy.
