User is already logged in when opening a Reckon Accounts Business company file

Legacy KB ID: 4879

Question

Why can’t I log into my Reckon Accounts Business (formerly QuickBooks) company file?  I get the message that I am already logged in.

Answer

You will get this error if your Accounts Business company file was shut down in an abnormal manner.  This may happen if you had a temporary network malfunction, a power failure or your computer spontaneously reboots while you had the company file open.  Your company file is tagged with your username as logged on and so you cannot log in again.

Workaround

Either, reboot your PC;

Or, stop the Reckon Accounts application process on the user PC.

1.    Close down Reckon Accounts

2.    Open the Task Manager:

a.    Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and press the Del key;

b.    Select Task Manager;

c.    Click on the Processes tab

3.    At the bottom of the screen tick the box Show processes from all users

4.    Scroll down the Image Name column to the letter Q.

5.    You should see a process called QBW32.EXE and the associated User Name will be your User Name for this computer.  Highlight it and click on the End Process button.

6.    Close the Task Manager;

7.    Open Reckon Accounts and you should be able to log in with your credentials.

You will need to carry out these steps on all Accounts Business computers that were involved in the abnormal shutdown.  In some instances you may need to undertake these steps on all computers and the server.
