Using Yahoo! Mail third-party App Passwords for Email Service Connection issues when emailing

Issue

The support for third-party apps or devices asking users to sign in to their Yahoo! Mail Account using only their Username and Password has been removed. Previously, users were able to send emails from a Desktop application such as Reckon Accounts without the need for elevated security.

Currently, emails sent from Reckon Accounts will encounter an Email Service Connection dialogue when trying to send an email.



Workaround

Use App Password from Yahoo.

Instead of using the Yahoo Password, it will use the App Password - which is already authenticated by Yahoo - and use it directly in Reckon Accounts.

Generate an App Password

  • In your Yahoo Account, select the User Profile on the top right then the Account Info option

  • Select Account Security on the navigation pane
  • Scroll down and see the ‘Other ways to sign in’ section
  • Select Generate app password

  • Click on Get started
  • Complete the Enter your app’s name field i.e. Reckon Accounts
  • Click on Generate password

  • The Generated app password window will appear with a 16-digit password
  • Copy the App Password
Because of the Reckon Accounts workflow, this App Password will need to be copied and stored safely by the user.

App Password will never be shown again and Yahoo only has an option to Delete it. If forgotten, the user will have to generate a new one.

Apply in Reckon Accounts

There is no change in the user workflow within Reckon Accounts.

Password prompts will still appear in the first instance an email is being sent. While in the same session, it will not be asked again if the first instance was successfully sent.
  • Open Reckon Accounts
  • When sending the first email on a new session, the Email Setting window should appear prompting for the Password
  • Enter the App Password and click OK
  • The email will be successfully sent and received by your recipient.
