Error 14 - Reckon Accounts OLE Link Error when installing Retail POS

Legacy KB ID: 3283

Question

Why do I receive a Reckon Accounts OLE Link Error when installing Retail Point of Sale?

Answer

You will receive this error when building the database for POS Administrator after installing Retail Point of Sale on a Windows 10/11.  POS Administrator is having difficulty contacting the Reckon Accounts data file.

The usual cause is that User Access Control (UAC) has been turned on to maximum level of security.

Other causes are:

·         Reckon Accounts is not activated;

·         The Reckon Accounts registration file (registration.dat) is corrupt;

·         security software set to a too restrictive level.

Workaround:

Disable the User Account Control:

Windows 10/11 :

1.    Windows Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > User Accounts>Change User Access Control Settings;

2.    Slide the vertical bar to “Never Notify”;

3.    Click OK to close;

4.    Reboot the computer and re-install Retail Point of Sale.

Check for Reckon Accounts Activation:

1.    Open Reckon Accounts – if it is not activated you will get a message inviting you to activate.  Follow the instructions to activate.

2.    If you get the error:  Reckon Accounts has a problem in reading this registration file, follow KB289 to rectify it.

Security software is set to a too restrictive setting

1.    Refer to your security software manual for directions of setting security levels;

2.    Ensure users have at least Power User rights to the Reckon Accounts and Retail POS application and files;

3.    See KB4013 for Reckon Accounts processes that must be made exceptions in your security software.
