Error (-12,0) when opening a company file

Legacy KB ID: 4354

Question

Why can’t I open my company file?  I get an error (-12,0).

Answer

Delete the .ND file that accompanies your company file.

The Issue

If you are working in a Terminal server environment, refer to the article KB5225.

On a standard network you are likely to get this problem when Accounts Business (formerly QuickBooks) cannot find the Database Server Manager or Hosting PC.  It is likely to happen after you have changed the name of the computer hosting the company file.

The .ND file that accompanies your company file has a reference to where to find the Database Server Manager or hosting PC.  In a network this reference is a computer name with the number of the Accounts Business version; eg:

ServerIp=192.168.2.176

EngineName=QB_RKN0145_20

Solution

Client/Server networks

1.    Close Accounts Business on all PCs;

2.    Delete the .ND file;

3.    On Client/Server Networks:

a.    rescan folders for Accounts Business files;

b.    Stop and start the DBxx Service;

On Peer to Peer Networks:

Stop and start the DBxx Service

where xx represents your Accounts Business version number:

2022 = 31

2023 = 32

4.    Launch Accounts Business.  New. ND file will be generated with the correct location specifications.
