How to improve performance by resetting the TLG file

What is a TLG file?

The Transaction Log File (.TLG) is automatically created and maintained by Reckon Accounts Hosted. It accompanies your company data file (.QBW) and is stored in the same folder on your Q: Drive, with the same file name.

The .TLG file logs every change made to your company file since your last successful backup using Complete Verification. When you perform a verified backup, this log resets.

In case of data loss, Reckon’s Data Recovery Team can use your .TLG file, alongside your most recent backup, to recover your company data up to the last saved transactions.

Why does the TLG affect Performance?

If you don’t regularly back up your file using Complete Verification, the .TLG file can grow excessively large over time. This results in:

  1. Slower performance, especially when opening your file or recording transactions
  2. Longer update times as Reckon attempts to process a large transaction log
  3. Backups that take longer or may fail
  4. Even if you perform backups regularly but don’t select the Complete Verification option, the .TLG file will not reset.

To maintain optimal performance, we recommend backing up with Complete Verification at least once per week.

How to reduce the TLG file size

You can manually reset the .TLG file by renaming it. This will cause Reckon to generate a new .TLG file the next time the company file is opened.

  1. Log in to Reckon Accounts Hosted, but do not open your company file.
  2. Go to My Files > Q Drive.
  3. In the Search field, type "TLG" and press Enter.
  4. Locate the .TLG file that matches your company file name.
  5. Tick the checkbox next to the correct file, then click Actions > Rename.
  6. Add a prefix like DO NOT USE_ to the file name (e.g. DO NOT USE_MyCompany.TLG) and click the checkmark icon to save.
  7. A new .TLG file will be automatically created the next time you open your company file.

Resetting the .TLG file through a Complete Verification backup is simple and safe.

  1. Log in and open your company file in Reckon Accounts Hosted.
  2. Go to File > Save Copy or Backup.
  3. Click Options, then select Complete Verification.
  4. Click OK and proceed with the backup process.

Depending on your file size, the process may take some time. It’s normal to see a “Not Responding” message - this does not mean the backup has failed.

Alternative Method: Portable Backup and Restore

If you're unable to complete a verified backup, create and restore a Portable Company File (.QBM).

  1. In the Save Copy or Backup window, select Portable Company File as the file type.
  2. Ensure Complete Verification is enabled.
  3. Complete the backup, then restore the portable file.

To prevent .TLG file growth and maintain good performance, back up your company file with Complete Verification at least once a week.
