How to improve performance by resetting the TLG file

What is a TLG file?

The transaction log file (TLG) is maintained automatically by Reckon Hosted as part of your data. The TLG accompanies your Data File (QBW) and resides in the Q: Drive in the same location as the QBW, it also has the same file name.

The TLG file is a special file that logs all the changes to the company data file since your last successful Complete verification backup. When you successfully complete a backup with the Complete Verification option selected the TLG file will reset.

In case of an accidental data loss, the Reckon Data Recovery Team can use your transaction log file, in conjunction with your most recent backup, to attempt to recover your data up to your most recently saved transactions.

Why does the TLG affect Performance?

If you don't perform regular backups of your data file, it is possible that the TLG file will grow extremely large since it contains a log of all the changes since the last verified backup. As the TLG file grows in size, it will start to increase the time it takes Reckon hosted to update the file as you record transactions.

Similarly, if you do perform regular backups but don't select the option to perform a Complete Verify during the backup process, it will again not reset the TLG file.

Over time, as the TLG file grows in size it will continue to degrade the file performance and you will begin to notice delays particularly when opening the data file or recording transactions.

An alternative way to reset the TLG file is to simply rename it.

Detailed steps.

  1. Login to Reckon Accounts hosted, but do not open your company file. (If the company data file is in-use you cannot rename the TLG file)
  2. Click on the file Download icon on the floating toolbar.
  3. Click on ‘Look In’ dropdown arrow and select your Q: drive or locate the shared folder in which your QBW file is located which is also where the TLG file is stored
  4. Type in the File name: field *.TLG and then press the Enter key on the keyboard to show only files with TLG in their file extension.
  5. Scroll down to locate the correct TLG file that you wish to rename.
  6. Select/Highlight the file by Right clicking on it with your mouse.
  7. Once the desired file is selected, Press F2 on your Keyboard.
  8. The data file name will now be Editable. Change it by adding a prefix "DO NOT USE" to file name and click anywhere else to save it.
  9. The TLG File name is now changed and saved, so when you next open your company data file a new TLG file will be created.

To reset the TLG file you can also perform a Backup with Complete Verification selected,

Detailed steps.

  1. Login to Reckon Accounts Hosted and open your company data file.
  2. Click File > Save Copy or Backup
  3. Then click Options and select Complete Verification.
  4. Click OK button and continue the backup process.

How long the backup takes depends on the size of your data file and the size of the TLG file.

It is OK to see the not responding warning message during this operation, the removal of the TLG and the backup will still be progressing while this message is showing.

If you are unable to successfully create the backup, another method for resetting the TLG file is to create and then restore a Portable Company File.

A Portable Backup is created and restored the same way as a normal backup, on the Save File: Type window, select Portable Company File, and then do a Backup with Complete Verification.

To ensure that the TLG File doesn't increase to a size where it could affect the performance of the Data File, we recommend completing a Backup with Complete Verification on a weekly basis.
