Error (-6000,-80) when restoring a backup

Legacy KB ID: 3892

Problem

When I open my Reckon Accounts company file or attempt to restore a backup, I get the error message:

"An error occurred when Reckon/QuickBooks tried to access the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Reckon/QuickBooks Techincal Support".

Solution

This error will occur if Reckon Accounts cannot recognise the file type, or if the file extension has been modified, or if the wrong file was selected to be opened.

Reckon Accounts company files/Reckon Accounts backup files should be one of the following extensions:

  • <company name>.QBW for normal company files;
  • <company name>.QBB for backup files;
  • <company name>.QBM for portable company files.
Other files will generate alongside a QBW, such as the TLG or ND files. These are not company files, and should not be selected for opening/restoration of company files/backups within Reckon Accounts.

To review what the file extension is, you can enable File Extensions on files by doing the following:

  1. Open your File Explorer.
  2. At the top of the file explorer, go to the "View" tab - it is located next to File, Home, and Share tabs.
  3. Ensure the "File name extensions" box is ticked.

After you have done so, attempt to open/restore the appropriate file type above.

If the problem persists, continue with the following steps until resolved:

Backup/Save the file again and select the correct file type in the Save as window during the backup process:

  • <company name>.QBB for backup files;
  • <company name>.QBM for portable company files.

Ensure that these files are saved locally (such as to your Desktop or Documents folder), or local to Reckon Accounts (such as in C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Backup\ , then attmept to restore them again.

If you encounter additional errors when saving/restoring this backup, you can check out our guide on common networking errors here.

Alternate Solution:

Failing the above, there is a small chance the file extension was modified manually. To correct this, you will need to manually modify the file extension back to normal.
We here at Reckon warn against modifying the properties of company files to change their file extension types, and would recommend contacting either a Reckon Technical Support agent, or getting in touch with your local IT to assist with the following.
This should only be performed as a last resort and can cause file corruptions if performed improperly.
  1. Right-click on the file you are trying to open.
  2. Select "Properties".
  3. In "General", you should see the name of the file with it's file extension (e.g. <company name>.QBW).
  4. Remove the "QBW" from the end of the file, and replace it with "QBB" or "QBM".
  5. Attempt to open the file as the relevant type in Reckon Accounts.
    1. If this does not work, go through the process again, but change it to whichever extension was left unused.
