QBQIF2OFX - Run-time error

Legacy KB ID: 4424

Question

Why does my bank statement import fail with the above error?

Answer

You may also get the error:  Runtime Error 53 – File not Found when importing a Bank Statement.

This error will commonly occur after you have installed another edition of QuickBooks and then uninstalled one of those editions.  The *.qbo file is still linked to the other version of QuickBooks and as it no longer exists, the file cannot be opened.

Workarounds

Option 1: Import the Web Connect File

The import process converts the QIF file to a QBO file and then attempts to import the information into QuickBooks.

Once created you can import the QBO file independently by:

  • File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect files
  • browse to where you saved the QBO file.

Option 2:  reassign the file association to the current version of QuickBooks

1.    Windows7 & Vista:  Start > Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program;

2.    Scroll down to the list to .qbo and double click on it;

3.    In the Open With window, click on Browse and navigate to your installation folder:

a.    The default location is C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 20xx-xx\

4.    Select QBW32.exe by double clicking on it and then select OK;

5.    The Current Default field for .qbo should change to QuickBooks Application or QuickBooks Launcher;

a.    Unknown Application is also acceptable

6.    Click Close to close the window.

7.    You should now be able to import your bank statement.

8.    If your import fails again, proceed to Option 2.

Option 3:  Uninstall and reinstall your edition of QuickBooks.
