Changes to security Name, No of Shares, Price

Legacy KB ID: 2766

Question

A share that I hold has recently been taken over by another corporation. The Name of the security has changed, the number of shares I own has reduced/increased and the price per share has changed as well. How do I enter this into Quicken to reflect the changes?

Answer

You will need to enter this in using the Corporate Acquisition (stock for stock) function:

  • Go to the Investing menu >Investing Accounts and select your desired investment account
  • Click Enter Transactions in the Overview or Transactions window
  • In the Enter transaction: field, locate and select Corporate Acquisition (stock for stock) in the drop down menu
  • Enter the required information

Transaction date - Select the date that the change has taken place

Company acquired - Choose the share/security you currently have named in your portfolio.

Acquiring company - Select the share/security that has taken over your existing stock.

New shares issued per held share - You will need to work out a ratio. EG you have 200 existing shares and now have been given 40 new shares. You will need to divide new share amount into the old shares.

  • 40/200 = 0.2. Enter this into this field

Price per share field - Enter in the new value of shares.

Select Enter Done.

Go to Investing menu>portfolio and you will now see that change has taken place.

NOTE: When working out the ratio of New shares issued per held share you may at times be left with the new share amount showing decimal places rather than a whole number. This is a limitation with using the Corporate Acquisition (Stock for Stock) option.

You can however enter this into your investment account register using a different method. This way involves using 2 transactions. One to remove the shares and the other to add the shares.

Go to the investing menu>investing accounts and choose your desired investment account.

Either click on the heading transactions or overview so that we see the Button ENTER TRANSACTIONS

Enter transactions field, click the arrow button and scroll through the list and choose Remove – Shares removed.

Security name - Choose the existing security

Number of shares - Enter the existing amount to be removed.

Click Enter New

In the Enter transactions field, click the arrow button and scroll through the list and choose Add – Shares Added.

Security name - select the new security name.

Number of shares - enter the new amount of shares received.

Price paid - enter the new price per share value.

Total cost - will just time the shares by the price value.

Click Enter Done.

Go to Investing menu>portfolio and you will now see that change has taken place.
