Error -6144,-103 or -6144, 0: An error occurred while Reckon tries to access the company file

Legacy KB ID: 3838

Question

When I try to stop hosting multi-user access in Reckon Accounts, why do I receive these errors?

·         An error occurred while Reckon Accounts tried to access the company file (-6144,-103)

·         An error occurred while Reckon Accounts tried to access the company file (-6144,0)

Answer

The Network Descriptor (.ND) file is used to store the path to your company file (.QBW), as well as the name of the server where it is being shared from. The -6144,0 and -6144,-103 errors occur if:

  1. Your .ND file has an incorrect path to your company file; or
  2. The Windows user account used by the Reckon Accounts Database Server Manager is damaged.

Solution:

Close Reckon Accounts and delete the .ND files associated with your company file. The .ND file is located in the same directory as your company file.

Should the system not automatically generate a new .ND file for your company file, try renaming it by adding an extra character to the name. For example, changing the name from MyCompanyFile.QBW to MyCompanyFile1.QBW and this should force a new .ND file to be created.

Open Reckon Accounts and open your company file.

  1. Server-based networks should launch the QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the file server and rescan their files.
  2. Peer-to-Peer networks should open Reckon Accounts on the host computer, turn on hosting multi-user access (File > Utilities > click on Host multi-user hosting).  Open each company file and switch it to multi-user access.
  3. Single users should launch Reckon Accounts and open their company files.

If the problem persists, uninstall and reinstall Reckon Accounts
