Error 5003 0x8004ace8 when installing Reckon Accounts or Tax Table Update

Legacy KB ID: 3882

Question

Why do I get “Error 5003 0x8004ace8” when installing Reckon Accounts or the Tax Table Update?

Answer

This error relates to InstallShield, a utility that automates the installation process.  The problem occurs when either:

·         The InstallShield folder is corrupt; or

·         Another process is blocking access to the folder; or

·         The user does not have sufficient permissions to the folder.

It can occur on any Windows operating system.

The exact number may be slightly different, but it will begin with -5004 or -5003.

Solution 1

1.    Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files;

2.    Rename the folder InstallShield to InstallShieldOLD;

3.    Restart the PC;

4.    Install QuickBooks or the Tax Table Update again.

When you start an install, InstallShield will create a new InstallShield folder.

If you get a further error: -5004 saying that another process is still using the program, then reboot your PC and try again.

If rebooting is not feasible, continue with the following:

1.         Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services;

2.         Right click on Windows Installer and select Properties;

3.         Click on the Start button and click Apply;

4.         Click on the Stop button and click OK;

5.         Close windows and install again.

Solution 2

Install in Selective Startup Mode or Safe Mode.
