Unknown patch error when applying a QuickBooks patch or service pack.

Question

Why am I getting an “unknown patch error: (number)” when applying a patch or service pack?

Answer

QuickBooks has found an unidentifiable error in trying to apply the patch.  The source of this problem is unclear but it is not critical. 

Solution.

Cancel the message and attempt to apply the patch or service pack again.

If the problem persists, delete the patch or service pack off your PC and download it again and apply.
