Crash: COM Error after installing Reckon Accounts

Legacy KB ID: 3785

Question

Why do I get the error “Crash: Com Error” trying to open Reckon Accounts for the first time?

Answer

This problem may be encountered on Windows devices if the .Net Framework 3.5 or the Service Pack 1 is not present or if the .Net Framework 3.5 and/or the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 files have become corrupt.

Solution

If you do not have .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 installed, visit the Microsoft website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=22 and follow their instructions to download and install the service pack.

Note:  Follow any instruction to reboot the PC as this is a necessary step to ensure the Registry has been properly adjusted.

You must then run Automatic Updates to pick up key security updates.  To start Automatic Updates click on Start > All Programs > Windows Update and follow the prompts.

If the .Net Framework 3.5 and .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 are installed but the installation files are corrupt, uninstall the .Net Framework 3.5:

  1. Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  2. Scroll down the list to Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5, highlight it and select "Remove"

Once removed, download the .Net Framework 3.5 from the Microsoft website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21 and follow their instructions to install it. Then, download and install the service pack 1 for .Net Framework 3.5 from the Microsoft website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=22

Note:  follow any instruction to reboot the PC as this is a necessary step to ensure the Registry has been properly adjusted.

Again, you must run automatic updates to pick up key security updates. To start automatic updates click on Start > Settings > Windows Update and follow the prompts.

Finally, open Reckon Accounts.

If problems persist, then other .Net Framework versions may be corrupt.  You will need to uninstall all .Net Framework versions on your PC and reinstall them.  Follow the Microsoft instructions and links on: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100
