Desktop Point of Sale: Setting up an Ethernet Printer

Question:

When trying to set up and use an Ethernet-based printer on POS, it does not become ready and/or does not receive any print data from POS, despite receiving print data elsewhere.

Answer:

Setting up an Ethernet printer will require a few things to start working.

  1. The printer to be named within the "Devices and Printers" in the Control Panel (more on this below)
  2. The IP of the Printer
  3. The Port the printer is operating on

To obtain this information, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Windows Start Menu
  2. Type in/search for "Control Panel"
  3. Find and select "Hardware and Sound"
  4. Then select "Devices and Printers"
  5. Right-click on the Ethernet printer you wish to use, and select "Printer Properties"
  6. Select "Ports"
  7. In this area, look at the name of the port. Normally, this will appear as the IP Address of the printer (for example, 192.168.0.100)
Take note of this as it is the IP Address of the printer.
  8. Right-click on the Port and select "Configure Port"
  9. Under "Raw Settings", note down the "Port Number"
    This will normally be 9100.
  10. Close out of the Printer settings

Once you have the IP Address and Port, we can link it to the Point of Sale Terminal.

  1. In the Point of Sale Terminal, select "Tools", then "Options"
  2. Select the Printer type of your choosing from the tabs (Receipt Printer, Kitchen Printer, etc...)
  3. Press "Custom"
  4. Select "New"
  5. In this window, enter the name of the printer you wish to use
  6. In the "Based On" field, select "Generic ESC/POS"
  7. In the "Attribute" field, click on the drop-down box and select "IPAddress"
Enter in the IP Address you noted down in the previous set of steps (Step 7).
  8. Click "Apply"
  9. Change the "Attribute" field to "IPPort"
Enter the Port you noted down in the previous set of steps (Step 9).
  10. Once this is done, select "Apply", then "OK"
  11. Select your printer from the list and press "Apply" again
You should now be able to print receipts to your Ethernet Receipt Printer.
