Legacy KB ID: 5442

Question

How do I fix 'Reckon Accounts has stopped working' errors?

Answer

The solution to this problem depends on when it occurs.

The error itself is a generic error letting you know that a line of code could not be completed.  Usually the function you were doing contains the error and this is where you should look for the solution.

Select the condition that best describes when this error occurred and follow the instructions there.  More than one condition may apply to your circumstance.

First time launch after a new installation.

First time launch after the computer upgraded to a newer operating system.

Case 1:

I get the error when opening the Reckon Accounts after installing, for the first time.

There may be already another instance of launcher running on the task manager which is causing the application to fail to load.

To fix the issue open the task manager and close all the instances of Reckon Accounts launcher

1) Start the task manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del on the keyboard.

2) Go to process and look for 'Reckon Accounts launcher (32 Bit)' under Apps.

(Note: you might have to click on 'More details' to see the process.)

3) Right click on it and select 'End task'. Do this for duplicate instance too, if there is any.

4) This should close all instance on Reckon launcher.

5) Try opening it again.

Case 2:

Some files did not install properly, possibly because of some security settings on your PC or conflict from another application.

Clean Uninstall and re-install the programme.  Please see the article: Clean Uninstall and Reinstall of Accounts Personal.

Some paths to required files may be different, or have different permission levels on the new operating system.

Uninstall and reinstall the programme.

You may need to run the application with elevated privileges, so right-click the launch icon > Properties > Compatibility and tick the option Run this program as an administrator.  If your progamme version is more than a couple of years old, then you may need to also tick Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP sp2.

After the programme has been operating properly for some time, the programme will not start

Conflicts

  1. Identify a recently installed, upgraded or updated application or a Windows Automatic update;

  2. Uninstall it and try again.

    1. If Reckon Accounts Personal works then you will not be able to use that application or windows automatic update together with Reckon Accounts Personal until a patch is developed and applied by the other application.

  3. In some cases, it is the order of installation that makes a difference, so uninstall Reckon Accounts and the other application and install Reckon Accounts first.

After the data file has been validated and repaired

  1. Hold down the Ctrl Key and launch Reckon Accounts, holding down the Ctrl Key until the programme opens.

  2. If the programme opens to a blank file then the datafile is corrupt.  Contact Data Recovery on

  3. If the programme fails to launch, then the programme installation is damaged.  You will need to clean uninstall and reinstall – see this guide

File name and path is too long.

  1. The total file path cannot exceed 250 characters, so if your data file is located several branches down the file structure, then consider moving it to another, shorter location.

  2. If a particular, unidentified, event occurs then the application may activate another code branch that cannot handle more than 8 characters in the name of the file.

    1. Rename the datafile to this shorter name through File > File Operations > Rename.

User does not have sufficient permissions to the Reckon Accounts Personal folder

  1. In File/windows Explorer, go to C drive > Programe files (x86);

  2. Right click on the Reckon Accounts Personal folder Properties > Security;

  3. Click on Administrators > Edit;

  4. Click on Administrators and tick the box Full control for Allow > OK.

  5. Close the dialog boxes.

  6. If the problem persists, create a new user profile on this PC.

When carrying out a specific action.

The data and processes involved are corrupt.

    1. Validate and supervalidate the datafile;

    2. Rename the datefile (to less than 8 characters)

    3. Relocate the datafile

    4. Where a process takes a number of separate steps, do them one at a time and where possible, change the order they are carried out.

      1. For example, One-Step Update.  Update share prices first and then update currency rates.

    5. Delete the transaction and re-enter it.
