Persistent errors accessing and staying connected to a Reckon Accounts company file in a networked enviro

Legacy KB ID: 4643

Question

All our users are having recurring problems in accessing Reckon Accounts data files located on a server from their workstations.   Sometimes we are able to access files easily with no problems, and other times it is practically impossible.  A variety of errors are encountered, but they don’t really apply to our situation:

Error (-6000,-816) -  Unable to open database.  The file is being used by another user.

Error (-6073,-816) – Reckon Accounts is unable to open this file.

Error: (-6129,-101) – An error occurred when Reckon Accounts tried to access the company file.

Error (-6176, 0) – Reckon Accounts was unable to communicate with the computer where the company file is located.

“You do not have sufficient permissions to access/create/ delete …..”

What can we do to ensure we can access our files consistently?

Answer

In the first instance, network users should ensure that the Reckon Accounts network is properly configured.  See KB404 https://kb.reckon.com.au/issue_view.asp?ID=404 for a full guide on a correct network setup.

Secondly, ensure there is nothing impeding the performance of your Reckon Accounts company file.  See KB3793 https://kb.reckon.com.au/issue_view.asp?ID=3793 for hints on improving performance.

Ensure that your network capacity and configuration is sufficient to handle the traffic generated by Reckon Accounts.

Ensure no Security software – firewall, anti-virus, real-time scanner, ip scanner, Desktop Management tools, are blocking Reckon Accounts processes.  See KB220 https://kb.reckon.com.au/issue_view.asp?ID=220 for a full guide.  Please note that security software on modems and routers may also block Reckon Accounts processes.

If your problems persist after carrying out these checks, and you are using a corporate or premium total security package, then that security package may not be suitable with Reckon Accounts.

These total security packages allow the user to configure security access at many points, and if all points are not correctly configured to allow Reckon Accounts processes, then Reckon Accounts may fail to gain access or maintain a connection to the company file.

Users should refer to their security package’s user manual, support desk, and if necessary their IT professional for guidance.

We are aware that some users with Norton Internet Security with Endpoint Protection eliminated their difficulties by switching to another security package.
