Converting Quicken Data to QuickBooks 2004

Legacy KB ID: 1638

Question

Can data be converted from Quicken to QuickBooks 2004?

Answer

Data can directly be converted from Quicken to QuickBooks 2004 if the Quicken data was created in one of the following versions;

-Quicken CashBook 2003

-Quicken CashBook 2004

-Quicken Personal/Personal Plus 2002

-Quicken Personal/Personal Plus 2002 SE

-Quicken Personal/Personal Plus 2004

If the data file was first created in a earlier version of Quicken (E.g. CashBook V8) the file can not be directly convert into QuickBooks 2004. Data may transfer incorrectly causing duplication in the tax amounts on transactions.

For a data file containing transactions from an early version of Quicken (Pre 2002) the transactions made in this version must first be ‘Archived’ and then a ‘Start New Year’ file should be created. Once the Quicken file no longer has transactions created in an early version of Quicken it can then be converted to QuickBooks.

Follow the steps below on how to ‘archive’ and create a ‘new year’ file;

1) Ensure all transactions for the period of time you wish to Archive are reconciled, and invoices created in that period are marked as paid. Any un-reconciled transactions or unpaid invoices will not archive. Unpaid Invoices that do need to be carried forward into the new data file will have to be deleted and then recreated once the file is upgraded.

2) Data that was created prior to version 2002 of Personal Plus or prior to version 2003 of CashBook will need to be archived.

-Select File menu > File Operations > Year End Copy.

-Select the ‘Archive’ radio button, enter the date you will archive up to and click ‘Ok’.

3) The data will archive to a new data file, open the original data file.

4) Ensure all transactions are reconciled for the period from archived to present.

5) Choose File menu > File Operations > Year End Copy.

6) Select the ‘Start New Year’ radio button, enter the date from which you wish to start the new file and click ‘Ok’.

7) Open the New Year data file (this is the file that will be converted to QuickBooks) and ensure there are no open transactions, as these will not convert into QuickBooks.

8) Open QuickBooks 2004, choose File > Import > Convert From Quicken….

9) Follow the wizard to convert your Quicken data file.
