Handling overpayments from customers

Question

How do I handle an overpayment from a customer?

Answer

If a customer sends you more money than they owe, there will be an amount left over in the Receive Payments window after you have applied the payment to invoices. Reckon Accounts keeps track of the credit amount so you can apply it the next time the customer owes you money.

To handle the overpayment:

  1. From the Reckon Accounts Customers menu, choose Receive Payments.
  2. Fill in the Receive Payments window with the appropriate information.
  3. Enter the entire payment in the Amount field.
  4. Apply as much of the payment as you can to outstanding invoices.
The leftover amount will display as an Unapplied Amount in the lower right corner of the window.
  5. Click Save & Close.
  6. To apply the overpayment, you can either wait until you have a future invoice to apply it to, or issue a refund check for the overpayment amount.
