Question

I have just upgraded to the latest Reckon Accounts Personal range from an earlier version (including the old Quicken and CashBook series) and when I try to open my datafile I get the error above.  Why?

Answer

You may experience this problem when you are upgrading to Reckon Accounts (formerly Quicken) Personal or Quicken Personal Plus.

You have used a function or feature in your earlier Reckon Accounts Personal or Quicken version that turned on the Tax Control Account, even though you have not processed a transaction with a tax component.  This account is no longer available in the Personal and Personal Plus editions.  However, as it has been turned on this datafile will only open with a version that uses the Tax Control Account – that is, Home & Business.

The instructions below will lead you through deleting the Tax Control Account from your datafile so that it will open in Personal or Personal Plus.

Note:

If you will be tracking tax, then Personal and Personal Plus editions are inappropriate for your needs.  You must upgrade to Home & Business.

If you are using, or have used, the memorized percentage split payee transaction, you will need to continue with Stage 2.

Detailed Instructions

Stage 1

To be able to access you file again you will need to temporarily upgrade your program to the Home & Business trial edition and then downgrade it back to your Reckon Accounts Personal edition.

1.    To get your Reckon Accounts Home & Business trial key, you need to click on the following links:

https://www.reckon.com/au/desktop-trial-request/

NOTE – DO NOT download the actual trial version, you are only looking for the key.  Fill in the details and then click on Download Trial, the next displayed page will contain Reckon Accounts Home & Business Key, write the number down.

  1. Start your Reckon Accounts Personal program and then click on Help drop down menu – Licence Information – click on Start over with a new installation key and enter the Home and Business key that was obtained in step 1 and click Ok.
  2. Now go to the File drop down menu – Open – Choose your file that reported the error message above.
  3. Go to Tools > Account List > Manage Accounts.
  4. Scroll down until you find the *Tax Control* account and double click on it.
  5. Click on the first transaction (the opening balance) and then select the delete option from the left top corner, and click yes to confirm.
  6. Go to Tools > Account List > Manage Accounts again.
  7. Scroll down until you find *Tax Control* account, Right Mouse click on it and then left click on  Delete, type the word yes where required and finally click on OK.
Note: If you are unable to delete the Tax Control account, rename it to Tax Control OLD
  8. Now you are ready to roll back to your original Reckon Accounts Personal version, you need to have your original Installation Key Code handy for you Reckon Accounts Personal or Personal Plus and follow Step 2 again.

Now you are ready to use your Reckon Accounts Personal file again.  Choose File drop down menu – Open and click on your file once and click OK to open.

Stage 2

We have found that when some users started using a memorised percentage split payee transaction in Quicken 2007 or earlier, they will not be able access their data file once they have closed the application and attempted to access their data file again.

Once you are able to open your file again, you will need to follow the steps below in order to be able to use the memorised percentage split payee transaction option:

  1. Go to Tools > Account List.

2.    Click On Add Account.

3.    Choose a Liability account option and Click Next.

4.    The name of the account has to be *Tax Control*.

5.    Follow with the rest of the wizard and when asked to create an amortised loan, click No.

6.    Go back to Tools > Account List.

7.    Click on the Manage Account Tab on the Left top Corner of the account list screen.

8.    Scroll towards the bottom of the list until you find the *Tax Control* account created in step 4.

9.    Check (tick) the Hide in Quicken Check Box.

10. Click on Close.

Alternate workaround

You can bypass this problem by not using the memorised Payee Split Transaction feature. To do that you need to go to Edit drop down menu > Preferences > Reckon Accounts Personal Program > Quick Fill > and then uncheck Recall memorised payees (requires automatic completion) option.
