Why do I get the message "Error Code 3 - Failed to write data to QuickPOS Administrator Port. Extended error Code 1231."?

Legacy KB ID: 3345

Question

The following error occurs when attempting to post from QuickPOS to QuickBooks, or vice-versa.
“The QuickPOS messaging System could not send the next message in its message queue.
Error Code 3 - Failed to write data to QuickPOS Administrator Port. Extended error Code 1231.
QuickPOS Administrator should be shut down and the PC re-booted as soon as possible so the messaging system can be re-started.”

Configuration: QuickPOS, Administrator and QuickBooks all on one machine. The PC is not on a network and may not have a network card installed.
How do I get around this?

Answer

First check in Control Panel, Networking, that
a. Client for Microsoft Networks  and
b. File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks and
c. Internet Protocol TCP/IP
are installed, then

On Win 95, 98, M.E., N.T. 4:
1. Right click on Network Neighbourhood and choose properties.
2. On the Configuration tab choose Add.
3. Choose to add an Adapter
4. Then select Microsoft and a Loop Back adapter.
The above can also be done through Control Panel - Add New Hardware as below.

On Win XP Pro (and Win 2000(screens will vary slightly)):
1. Go to Start - Control Panel - Add New Hardware.
2. Click Next on the following screen and let Windows search for new hardware (It usually will not find any new hardware).
3. Windows will then ask if you have installed new hardware. Select Yes.
4. In the next window, you will be asked to select from a list of devices that you wish to install. Scroll to the very bottom of the list and select "Add a new hardware Device".
5. The wizard will now ask you, if you wish to select your hardware from a list or let windows search for the hardware. Select "Install the Hardware that I manually select from the list".
6. Scroll through the list of devices and click on "Network Adaptors" and click "Next".
7. Finally, you will be given the option to install the Microsoft Loopback Adaptor. Click on this, and click Next.
8. To begin installation, click Next.
Reboot your PC and attempt to transfer again.
