QIF file from St George Bank does not import

Legacy KB ID: 4618

Question

Why can I no longer import a QIF file from St George Bank?  I get an error:

Errors were encountered whilst attempting to convert: C:\...QIF.  Please ensure that this file is a valid QIF file.

Answer

Recently St George Bank changed the format of its QIF file.  It now contains additional fields at the start and the end of the file.

These additional fields must be removed before the QIF file can be imported into QuickBooks or Quicken.

Workaround

1.    Make a copy of your QIF file for a backup;

2.    Open your QIF file with Notepad:

a.    In Windows Explorer, browse to your folder;

b.    Right-click the QIF file and select Open With and then Notepad.

3.    You will now see the contents of the file.  Lines 2 – 5 are new and must be removed.  Line 4 contains: “PClosing Balance”:

Highlight these lines then click on Delete;

4.    The bottom also has 4 additional lines that must be removed.  The second last line contains: “POpening Balance”;

5.    Click on File > Exit to save and close the file.

You should now be able to import the file.
