Error message "Could not open quicken file" on opening the Quicken program after running a 3rd party backup application

Legacy KB ID: 3160

Question

Why do I get message "could not open quicken file" or similar when opening Quicken?

Answer

This error can be caused by a process within a third party backup program when used to backup the Quicken datafile.

Quicken highly recommends the use of the built in backup feature to backup files, backing your data file by using external software may alter your Quicken data and thus isn't supported by us.

The following information hasn't been tested by Quicken and in no way guranteed or supported to work, you should seek technical assistance by your system administrator or manufacturer.

After every backup performed with the backup application (full or incremental) you need to reset the archive bit on all Quicken Datafiles.

Click 'START' the click 'RUN'
Type in 'command' and press 'enter' or click 'ok' (this will provide a DOS/Command prompt)
Type: ATTRIB +A c:\quicken\*.* /s

NOTE - You must substitute the 'c:\quickendata\*' portion in the step above to the data destination where the Quicken datafiles are saved.

How did we do?

Split data information is lost when I upgraded my file from Quicken Personal Plus 2004, 2002 or 2002 Second Edition to Quicken 2007.

Banking Summary report doesnt show the opening balance
