How to merge bank accounts

Legacy KB ID: 5351

Question

How do I merge an existing bank ledger account into a new bank ledger account I created for the same bank account?

Answer

Sometimes a bank ledger account will become corrupt. That does not mean the transactions are lost.  They can be transferred to a new bank ledger account.

Workaround

Create a new Bank Account and merge the old one into the new account.

Before commencing we suggest you create a fresh backup of your company file.

  1. Rename this bank account:

    1. Lists > Chart of Accounts;

    2. right click your bank account and select Edit Account;

    3. Change the name by adding OLD to the name > Save & Close.

  2. Create a new Bank Account:

    1. Lists > Chart of Accounts > Account > New;

    2. Enter the original name > Save & Close.

  3. Rename the changed account back to the original name (eg: remove OLD):

    1. Lists > Chart of Accounts;

    2. right click your old bank account and select Edit Account;

    3. Change name to the name of the new account > Save & Close;

    4. Click Yes to the Merge message;

    5. Your Chart of Accounts will show only one bank account.
