Turning on Random Barcodes in Retail POS

Legacy KB ID: 4315

Question

How do I turn on and configure Random Barcodes in Retail POS?

Answer

Random barcodes are used when a weight scale or device creates a printed barcode which contains the product code and price of a sales item. This barcode can then be scanned into Point of Sale to show the correct sales item at the weighed price.

(For example, a supermarket weighs the sales item, prints a barcode from the scale and places it onto the item. The customer then takes the item to the counter to be scanned and the system displays the correct price).

1.    Setting up Reckon Accounts:

·         Create or edit an existing item

·         Click on the Custom Fields button

·         Enter the item code in the Product Number field (do not enter in a Product Barcode number)

·         Click OK

·         Ensure no Barcode number is entered in the Barcode field in the Edit Item window

  • Transfer the new or edited item to Point of Sale

2.    Setting up Point of Sale Administrator:

·         Click on Tools > Options… > Scanning tab

·         Click on the Activate random price barcode scanning tick box (to add a tick)

·         Highlight the required Barcode Format (determined by the prefix of the scale being used)

·         Click on the Edit button

·         Remove the tick in the Random price barcodes with this prefix are inactive box

·         Select the Barcode Format used by your scale (the Example field shows the format for each)

For example:

Format: Prefix 02     5 Product; 1 Price Check Digit; 4 Price; 1 Check Digit

The example barcode for this prefix is:               0211111233334

02      = Prefix

1’s      = Product Code

2        = Price Check

3’s      = Price

4        = Check Digit

Product Code = 12345 (the item code used in QuickBooks, as in Step 1)

Price = $10.75 (i.e. 1075)

Therefore the above product barcode would be:   021234521075

·         Select Price includes tax (optional)

·         Select Calculate Unit of Measure (optional)

·         Click OK

  • Click Apply > OK

3.    Setting up Point of Sale Terminal:

·         Click on Tools > Options… > Scanner tab

·         Select the barcode scanner in the Type field

·         Select the connection type in the Connected To field

  • Click Apply > OK
