POS Administrator cannot open the Point of Sale ‘RPOS’ database on .... installing 2016 Enterprise

Legacy KB ID: 5393

Question

Why do I get the error:  ‘Point of Sale Administrator cannot open the Point of Sale ‘RPOS’ database on ‘….’  when trying to create a login to the SQL Server 2014 SP?

This happens during the POS Administrator installation and during the POS Terminal First Use Wizard.

Answer

Update the value for the SQL Server native client in the PointOfSale.ini file.

The Issue

This issue can occur on a machine if SQL Server 2014 SP1 is installed after POS is installed on that machine, and possibly in other scenarios with SQL Server 2014 SP1.

Updating the POS ini file for the correct version will correct the issue.

How to update the POS ini file for the SQL Server version

  1. Close POS Administrator and Terminal (eg. the First Use Wizards) on the machine.
  2. Navigate to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Reckon\PointOfSale, and open the file PointOfSale.ini
  3. Under the section [AdminAndTerminal], find the line starting with Connection String= and change the number at the end of this line to 11.0 so that it reads

Connection String=ODBC;Driver={SQL Server Native Client 11.0}

  1. Save the file and close it.
  2. Try proceeding through the POS Wizard again.

If you still have the issue, check that you have added exceptions to the Windows firewall as listed in the POS Enterprise Install pdf on the POS DVD.
