Reckon Accounts Setup has detected that this system should be restarted.

Legacy KB ID: 1310

Question

Reckon Accounts Setup has detected that this system should be restarted, We strongly recommend that you restart your system now. There are pending file operations.

When I press OK, the following message is displayed:

Reckon Accounts could not be installed completely. Cancelling Set-up.

Answer

When a program is installed or uninstalled, it creates a Windows system file (WinInit.ini) that lists pending file operations that will complete after the system is restarted.

These operations generally consist of registering/unregistering files, deleting temporary files, and updating other Windows system files that were in use during the installation.

If a WinInit.ini file is found when Reckon Accounts is installing, Reckon Accounts halts the installation until you restart your computer and the pending file operations listed in the WinInit.ini file is completed.

This allows Reckon Accounts to create its own WinInit.ini file for the pending file operations of the Reckon Accounts installation.

If this message persists after restarting, it indicates that the pending file operations in the WinInit.ini file (created during an earlier installation of another application) could not be completed. There may be a problem with one or more programs that have been installed on the computer, or with Windows itself. In this situation, Reckon Accounts may be unable to complete its installation successfully.

Solution:

To resolve this system issue, we recommend that you contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer.

However, following the steps below should allow you to install Reckon Accounts.

Windows 95, 98, or Millennium Edition:

IMPORTANT: Applying this solution is left to your discretion.

1. Search your local hard disk, usually drive C: for the WinInit.ini file. To search for a file, click the Windows Start button, choose Find or Search, then choose Files or Folders. If you are unfamiliar with the Find (or Search) window that opens up, click on the Help menu and choose Help Topics.

2. Upon searching for the file in the Find (or Search) window, you should find one file and it should be (or usually is) located in the folder C:\Windows.

3. Double-click the file and examine its contents for program(s) or manufacturer(s) that you recognize. You can accomplish this by reviewing each line of the file onscreen or printing the file and reviewing the printed information. (The printed file may be very long). Any programs listed in this file may be experiencing problems or may not be completely installed or uninstalled.

4. Once you have noted the programs listed in the file or printed the file contents, close the WinInit.ini file and rename it to WinInitold.ini. To rename a file, right click on the WinInit.ini file and from the menu that appears, choose Rename. Type the new name in the box, press Enter, and then close the Find (or Search) window.

5. Install Reckon Accounts.

6. Restart your computer.

7. Repeat Steps #1 and #2 to locate the WinInitold.ini file that you created in Step #4.

8. Rename WinInitold.ini to WinInit.ini. If you receive a message that the file already exists, have a technician look at your system; receiving this message after completing all the above steps would indicate system issues that have prevented Reckon Accounts from installing completely.

Windows NT, 2000, or XP:
