Question

Why do I receive the following error message when I attempt to install Reckon Accounts?

Setup failed to launch installation engine: Error loading Type Library/DLL.

Answer

To resolve this error message, use one of the following options:

Copy Stdole32.tlb from the Windows System folder of a computer that is running the same version of Windows and paste it into the same folder on the computer where you are trying to install Reckon Accounts.

OR

Extract the Stdole32.tlb file from the Windows installation CD - To extract the file from the Windows CD, follow the steps below for your version of Windows.

For Windows 98:

1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Run.

2. Type sfc in the Open: field of the Run window and click OK.

3. In the System File Checker window, select Extract one file from Installation disk.

4. In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type stdole32.tlb, and then click Start. In the Extract File window, if the Restore from field is blank, browse to the Win9x folder on your Windows 98 installation CD-ROM. If the Save file in field is blank, browse to the Windows System folder on your hard disk.

5. Click OK, click OK again, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer

For Windows Me:

1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Run.

2. Type msconfig in the Open: field of the Run window and click OK.

3. On the General tab of the System Configuration Utility window, click Extract File.

4. In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type stdole32.tlb, and then click Start.

5. In the Extract File window, if the Restore from field is blank, browse to the Win9x directory on your Windows Me installation CD-ROM or to C:\Windows\Options\Install on your hard disk.

6. If the Save file in field is blank, browse to the Windows System folder on your hard disk.

7. Click OK to extract the file, and then click Yes to create a folder for the extracted file.

8. Drag the extracted file from the folder created in Step 7 to the Windows System folder on your hard disk.

9. Restart your computer.

For Windows NT and 2000: From the Windows Start menu, choose Run. Type command in the Open: field of the Run window and click OK.

Note: Your Windows NT or Windows 2000 CD should already be inserted in the CD-ROM drive. The d in the typed information in Step 3 represents the drive letter that identifies the CD-ROM drive. If the CD-ROM drive is identified by another letter, type that letter rather than d. At the C: prompt in the command window, type expand d:\i386\stdole32.tl_ c:\winnt\system32\stdole32.tlb and press Enter.

Important: It is essential that you type the information in Step 3 exactly, including typed spaces. A space exists after the word expand and after the underscore character in the file name stdole32.tl_. Press the space bar once in each of these instances, then continue typing the rest of the information. Type exit and then press Enter to close the command window. Restart your computer.

For Windows XP: From the Windows Start menu, choose Run. Type msconfig in the Open: field of the Run window and click OK. On the General tab of the System Configuration Utility window, click Expand. In the File to restore: field type stdole32.tlb.

Note: Your Windows XP CD should already be inserted in the CD-ROM drive. The d in the typed information in Step 5 represents the drive letter that identifies the CD-ROM drive. If the CD-ROM drive is identified by another letter, type that letter rather than d.

In the Restore from: field type d:\i386. In the Save file in: field type c:\windows\system32. Click the Expand button. Restart your computer.
