Reckon Accounts Desktop: Crashing when opening file

Problem

I can't get into the company file - I get a generic error:

Reckon Accounts has experienced a problem and must be shut down.

How can I fix this?

Solution

Reckon Accounts Desktop may not be able to open the data file if it has been damaged or if there is a problem inside the company file, or if a corrupt file is loading up and causing the program to crash.

To fix this, there are a few actions you can take:

  1. Run Reckon Accounts Desktop. Before it opens fully, hold down Control + Shift + Alt on your keyboard at the same time. This will launch Reckon Accounts without any company file open.
  2. Hold down Control + Shift + Alt on your keyboard at the same time, and open your company file. This will open your company file with no windows/data on-screen.
    1. If it prompts you to enter your password, type your password in, then hold down Control + Shift + Alt.

If this still crashes Reckon Accounts, continue with the following instructions:

  1. Right-click the Reckon Accounts shortcut on your desktop.
  2. Select Run as Administrator.
  3. Before Reckon Accounts opens, hold down Control + Shift + Alt.
  4. Hold down Control + Shift + Alt on your keyboard at the same time, and open your company file.
    1. If it prompts you to enter your password, type your password in, then hold down Control + Shift + Alt.

If your file opens:

  1. Go to File.
  2. Go to Utilities.
  3. Select Rebuild Data.
  4. Operate your file as usual. Take note of where and when it crashes (i.e. if it crashes on a transaction, make a note of that transaction's date, name, number, etc.). You may need to delete this transaction when you re-launch.
