Question

Why am I getting this error: 

"Adaptive server anywhere database engine has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Answer

This error may occur if:

  1. The company file is damaged
  2. Reckon Accounts was not correctly installed
  3. The installation has become corrupted
  4. The company file was copied to a USB, and the USB was removed without closing Reckon

Solution

If the error occurs when opening the Company File:
  1. As you relaunch Reckon Accounts, hold down Ctrl and Shift keys as you launch Reckon Accounts to access the No Company Open screen
  2. Open a different company file
  3. If you do not have another company file , use the sample file
    If you cannot open it from the "Sample Company File" button, you can find it here:
    C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Sample Company Files\Reckon Accounts 20XX\
  4. Open the company file that was giving you the error

If the problem persists, then:

  1. If it is your company file, restore a backup and re-input transactions entered since the backup was made.
    If this continues, proceed to step 2.
  2. Contact Data Recovery at: https://www.reckon.com/au/support/data-services/
  3. If this file is from another user and another computer, ask that user to send you another copy
If the error occurs when opening the Customer, Supplier or Employee Centre:
  1. Resort Lists, Rebuild and Verify.  Examine the QBwin.log file to ensure that all issues identified have been successfully resolved. 
  2. If the error persists, create a Portable Company File and restore it.
  3. If the error contiues to persist, restore a backup and re-input transactions entered since the backup.
    If this continues, proceed to step 4.
  4. Contact Data Recovery at: https://www.reckon.com/au/support/data-services/
If the error occurs when opening QuickBooks:
  1. Scan your computer for viruses. If you are not confident in this procedure please contact your local IT professional. 
  2. Uninstall and reinstall Reckon Accounts.
