Scanning a barcode in a form closes that form before it is complete

Legacy KB ID: 5096

Question

Why does the Purchase Order form close the moment I scan the barcode for the item I am ordering?  I have to re-open the Purchase Order to complete it.

Answer

Go to Edit > Preferences > General and tick 'Pressing Enter moves between fields'.

The Issue

You will experience this behaviour on any form where you can scan the barcode of an item.

The action results from the scanner configuration placing a “carriage return” character at the end of the barcode.  The carriage return is also the Enter command for Accounts Business.  When you scan a barcode you are also instructing Accounts Business so save and close the form.

Workaround 1

Reconfigure Accounts Business not to save and close the form when the carriage return is entered:

1.    Edit > Preferences > General > My Preferences;

2.    Tick the first option:  Pressing Enter moves between fields;

3.    Click OK to close

Accounts Business will now advance to the next field after reading the barcode.

Workaround 2

Reconfigure your scanner to not place a carriage return after the barcode.

Refer to your scanner’s manual.

Please Note that if you are using the scanner on another system, like Reckon POS, the carriage return may be a required entry.  You will need to reconfigure the scanner for use on that system again.
