Date format changes after exporting to Excel

Legacy KB ID: 5040

Question

Why does the date format change when I click on a date field in the Excel version of a report?  How can I keep the dd/mm/yyyy format?

Answer

Export to a csv file, then open the csv file with Excel.

The Issue

You will experience this issue when you have a date column in a report like Customer Contact List.  Initially, the dates appear in the dd/mm/yyyy format, but when yu click on date fields like Projected End and End Date, the format changes to mm/dd/yyyy.  You cannot change it back to the original format.

The Date column Start Date will change to mm/dd/yyyy when you click on it, but when you click on another field it returns to the original dd/mm/yyyy format.

Detailed Instructions

Export the file to a csv file:

1.    When exporting, select a comma separated values (.csv) files;

2.    Save the file to a convenient location, like your Documents folder or the Desktop;

3.    In Windows Explorer browse to this location and double click on the file to open it.  If asked for a program, select Excel;

Please Note, this file will not have the formatting that accompanies the export to Excel directly.
