Error 1316 The account already exists when upgrading POS

Question

Why do I get the error: “Error 1316: the account already exists” when upgrading to the new version of POS?

Answer

Uninstall the previous version and install again.

 

The Issue

You may get this error if your removal of the previous version did not complete properly and some installation files have been left on your PC.  These remnant files are enough to prevent the installation of the next version.

 

Workaround

Uninstall the previous version of POS with either:

  1. Microsoft: Uninstall or remove apps and programs in Windows.
    1. For troubleshooting purposes, follow the steps provided here.
  2. Or, a third-party uninstaller like Revo Uninstaller.

 

You should now be able to install your new version of POS.
