The value of the Employee Number must be in a range 1…9999 message when upgrading to Payroll Premier

Legacy KB ID: 5152

Question

Why do I get the error: The value of the Employee Number must be in the range 1…9999 when upgrading to Payroll Premier 2014/15?  I have been using 5-digit numbers of a number of years and there never has been a restriction.

Answer

Click OK on the message and the upgrade will continue.

The Issue

The upgrade program runs various checks on your data.  One check is configured to expects no more than 4 digits in the Employee Number, although in the program itself a larger number of digits are allowed.

During the upgrade a difference to the number of digits in your Employee Numbers was detected and the message is displayed.

Reckon apologies for the inconvenience this change has caused.

Workaround

This is a benign message.  Clicking on OK will allow the upgrade to continue.

However, you will be prompted for every employee with a number of 5 or more digits.

Furthermore, you will be prompted for each digit above 4 digits in the number.  That is for a 5-digit number you get the message once; for a 6-digit number you will get the message twice; and so on.
