Error (-6123,0): Cannot find the Database Server when opening a company file for the first time in Q

Legacy KB ID: 4472

Question

I have just installed QuickBooks 2012/13.  Why when trying to open the Sample file or my company file do I get the error:  Error (-6123,0): Cannot find the Database Server?

Answer

This issue may be encountered when QuickBooks was installed with the option QuickBooks Only.  In some instances one of the QuickBooks network services is switched on that forces QuickBooks to search for the Database Manager.  When it fails to find it (because it has not been activated) the error is generated.

Workaround

1.    Close QuickBooks

2.    Open the Task Manager by pressing the keys Ctrl, Alt and Del together then selecting Task Manager from the list

3.    Click on the Processes tab

Windows 8 Users: click on Details tab

4.    Scroll down to the process QBDBMgrN.exe.  Highlight it and press End Process

5.    Close the Task Manager.

You should now be able to open your company file.
