Your system might not have enough memory to use Excel when exporting reports

Legacy KB ID: 5643

Question

Why do I get the error “Your system might not have enough memory to use Excel. Try again after closing some applications” when I try to export to Excel?  My local computer is only using 50% RAM and there is plenty of capacity on the network

Answer

Your computer environment does not have sufficient resources, or there is damage to the Microsoft Office installation, that results in the computer not having access to sufficient memory to carry out the task.

Solution

Please work through the following steps until the issue is resolved.

Step 1 - Reboot the local computer

A reboot will close all programmes and free up all the random access memory.  Once the PC restarts open Reckon Accounts before any other programme and test exporting to Excel.

If you still are unable to export the report in Excel, continue with the next step…..

Step 2 (where company file is on a network drive)– Test export to Excel when the company file is on the local computer.

If the company file is saved on a server, move the file locally.

1.      Copy the company file from the network drive to a local drive;

      1. Go to the company file location on the server computer;
      2. Right click the CompanyFileName.qbw then select Copy;
      3. Paste the company file to a location on the local computer (eg; Desktop).

2.      Open Reckon Accounts and access the company file from the new location;

3.      Test exporting to Excel.

If you do not get the error then the server may be low on memory.

Close other programmes on the server, and if needed, reboot the server and test again.

If you still are unable to export the report in Excel, continue with the next step…..

Step 3 - Try a different report or smaller date range

If you do not still experience the error with a different report or smaller date range then you may be low on system resources.

If you still are unable to export the report in Excel, continue with the next step…..

Step 4 - Repair Microsoft Office

Note:  if you are not confident in carrying out maintenance tasks on your computer please see your IT professional.

Windows 10, 8:

1.        Press the Windows logo key + X, select Control Panel and click on Programs and Features;

2.        Select your Office programme and click Change;

3.        Choose Repair, and reboot when complete.

Windows 7:

1.        Click the Start menu and choose Control Panel.

2.        Click Programs and Features.

3.        Select your Office programme and click Change.

4.        Choose Repair, and reboot when complete.

Test exporting to Excel again.

If you still are unable to export the report in Excel, continue with the next step…..

Step 5 - Uninstall/Reinstall Office

Note:  if you are not confident carrying out maintenance tasks on your computer please see your IT professional.

Your Office installation may be corrupt or have some registry damage.  Uninstall the programme through Programs and Features and reinstall.
