Legacy KB ID: 4062

Question

Why do I get the error:

Either there is no default email client or the current mail client cannot fulfil the messaging request.  Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client.

when i attempt to email from QuickBooks 2011/12?  I have Outlook 2010 64-bit selected as my default email client.

Answer

This is a benign message that we do not know the cause of.

You can click OK and the email will proceed.

This error will appear only before the first email being sent on this session; the remaining emails will not produce this error.

If you get other error messages that contain the option “Switch to”, select it and continue.

Workaround

To reduce the incidence of this error users have found the following helpful on a Windows 7 installation:

1.    Go to Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Programs > Internet Programs – Set programs >

2.    Firstly, select Set your default programs and select Outlook;

3.    Then, from the Internet Programs – Set programs Screen, select Set program access and computer defaults > Custom> choose a default e-mail program > and select Microsoft Office Outlook.
