You can not open this file because you do not have a valid licence key

Question

Trying to open a file in multiuser mode after reinstalling the software when someone else is already using the file.

Answer

The problem is occuring because both machines have used the same quickbooks pro licence key's. Quickbooks need to have different pro licence key's or one multiuser licence key to function in multiuser mode. To fix -

1. Make sure you have more than 1 pro licence key



2. Close Quickbooks



3. Go to Start => Run... and type "regedit"



4. When regedit opens go to H_KEY LOCAL MACHINE => SOFTWARE => Intuit => QuickBooksRegristration => 8.0 folder(or whatever the latest version is) and look for

the "InstallNumber"



5. Right click on the install number and select "Modify".

5b. Also right click and modify the value in "Registrationnumber" to "UNREG"



6. Change the number to the other licence key exactly as it appears on the coloured sticker



7. Click "OK"



8. Close regedit



9. Start quickbooks and register the machine
