Quicken Installation Error – An error has occurred while installing Quicken

Legacy KB ID: 3780

Question

Why do I get the error ‘An error has occurred while installing Quicken’ when I’m reinstalling Quicken?  When I click on the Online Help button I’m taken to a Quicken site that is not part of Reckon.

Answer

You will encounter this problem when you attempt to re-install your version of Quicken when that version is still installed on this PC.

The Online Help Button is linked to our international parent’s website.  For support view the FAQ on Reckon’s Quicken website at:  https://kb.reckon.com.au/search.asp
or call the Technical Support Desk.

Solution

Uninstall the existing installation of Quicken

Windows 7 & Vista:

1.    Windows Start button > Control Panel > Programs and Features

2.    Highlight Quicken 20xx (where 20xx is your year version), right-click and select uninstall

3.    Check that Quicken has been removed from the list

Windows XP:

1.    Windows Start button > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

2.    Click on Quicken 20xx (where 20xx is your year version) then click on Remove

3.    Check that Quicken has been removed from the list

Install Quicken again.

If you still have problems installing Quicken then you will need to run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all traces of the previous installation.

  1. Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from:  library.reckon.com.au/library/zip/WindowsInstallerCleanUp.zip
  2. Save the download file to your Desktop.  Once the file has downloaded double-click on its desktop icon and follow the on-screen instructions.  When installed is should open ready for use.
  3. Before using the Utility go to the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Installer Cleanup\ open and read the file readme.txt.
  4. If the Utility did not start you can launch it from this folder by clicking on msicuu.exe.

Using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

This utility will remove programs and remnants of programs that were originally installed using the Windows Installer program and that have not been removed by the normal uninstall processes.  This utility should be used as a “last resort”.

When the utility opens you will see a list of installed programs.  Scroll down the list and highlight your Quicken version – it should be the only Quicken version there.

Left-click on your Quicken version then click on Remove at the bottom of the window.  The following prompt will display:

Warning - All items selected will be removed from the Windows Installer
database. In order for the items to work properly, you must individually
re-install all items selected. Select OK to continue removing product,
   Cancel to abort.

If you click 'OK,' all the Windows Installer information that is associated with the selected program will be removed.  Click OK to remove Quicken.

You can now re-install your Quicken version.
