"The attempted operation failed" in Outlook 2010 when reconciling a bank account

Question

Why do I get this error:  "The attempted operation failed" from Outlook 2010 when I attempt to reconcile my bank account?

Answer

This problem may be encountered on 64-bit operating systems. 

The only link between reconciling a bank account and Outlook 2010 is the PDF generation.  Quickbooks 2010/11 has not been tested with Office 2010. 

Office 2010 allows you to install as either 32-bit or 64-bit system.  We are receiving reports that QuickBooks 2010-11 with Office 2010 64-bit on a 64-bit Operating System experiences issues.  Intuit advises that the Active X controls and COM objects used by QuickBooks are processed differently by Office 2010 64-bit to the 32-bit version and previous editions of Office.  We are not hearing of any critical problems with the 32-bit version.

 

32-bit Workaround

Follow the procedures in kb3577 “QuickBooks PDF problems on 64-bit Windows Operating Systems when emailing or reconciling”.

 

64-bit Workaround

Uninstall the 64-bit Office 2010 and re-install using the 32-bit version.
